Television Sydney audience continues to grow
Television Sydney documentary Kokoda: In the Footsteps of the Brave
More viewers than ever are turning to Television Sydney, with May ratings showing digital 44's audience has grown 27 per cent in the last six months.
Television Sydney is the city's only not-for-profit, free to air community television licence holder, broadcasting from the University of Western Sydney's Werrington base to the Sydney Basin.
Television Sydney Chief Executive Rachel Bentley welcomed the figures, saying the station offered an alternative to the mainstream media.
"Television Sydney is committed to providing diverse, thought-provoking and interesting content to people across Sydney," she said.
"Community television raises and promotes issues of local significance in partnership with the community, and features issues often ignored in the mainstream media.
"We are proud our small team is reaching out successfully to our audience to enhance the diversity of programming choices available to the public."
A subsidiary of the University of Western Sydney (UWS), Television Sydney prides itself on being a training base for students and jump-starting the careers of budding industry professionals by providing an outlet to showcase their work.
Television Sydney has also broadcast a number of its own programs over 2013/14, including the two-time ATOM Award-nominated children's series Enquiring Minds, the inspirational series Models of Achievement and Indigenous Models of Achievement, and the documentary Kokoda: In the Footsteps of the Brave, produced in conjunction with Panthers on the Prowl.
Coming up later this year will be other home-grown programs produced in conjunction with the UWS Community Production Unit, including book show Shelf Life, chat show The Why Generation, and debates courtesy of the UWS Open Fora series.
A panel show featuring entrepreneur and philanthropist Harold Mitchell, AC, will also screen later in 2014.
