Technology key to building maths skills and the nation

At the recent Australian Conference on Science and Mathematics Education UWS Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover explored the increasingly disruptive role of technology in higher education but also the potential benefits for students and the nation.
In a keynote address Professor Glover says technology is perhaps the most challenging aspect of the transformation that is underway in science, technology and mathematics (STEM) education but it holds the potential to increase student engagement in STEM education and enhance students' problem solving skills.
He says there needs to be a focus on improving the quality of mathematics education through greater investment in teacher education and the use of more sophisticated learning materials and technologies.
Despite advances in technology and opportunities for blended learning there does not seem to have been significant developments in mathematics education in over 25 years.
Universities need to take advantage of the massive strides in technology and opportunities for blended learning says Professor Glover.
He says STEM education is critical to making a successful transition to a knowledge economy and securing the nation's future.
