Richmond High takes out UniSchools Steer Challenge

UniSchool Steers Challenge

The students of Richmond High School have taken out the 2012 University of Western Sydney's Unischools Steer Challenge after their students gave a strong showing in all the competition categories.

Sixteen schools from across Greater Western Sydney were entrusted with a Poll Hereford steer for the past three months, giving them a firsthand insight into raising a steer and what it takes to produce quality Australian beef.

This knowledge was put to the test at the 'Live day' competition as the students and their steers were put to the test in several categories, including steer weight gain, best presented steer, and many others to determine the winner of the competition.

At the Closing Ceremony, Richmond High was announced as the overall winner for 2012, with Bede Polding College and Elizabeth Macarthur High taking out several categories.

The organiser of the 2012 UniSteer challenge Stephen Blunden paid tribute to the hard work of all the teachers involved.

"The time the teachers and the students put into the competition is phenomenal, especially considering the unique challenges that go into raising a steer in suburban Sydney and the preparation before the final competitions," says Mr Blunden.

"The competition goes from strength to strength, and its growing popularity can be seen by the fact that three more schools have expressed an interest in being involved next year."

"On behalf of the university I'd like to express my thanks to everyone who took part, and offer my congratulations to all the students."
