Western researcher to join ARC College of Experts
Western Sydney University’s Professor Samanthika Liyanapathirana from the School of Engineering, Design and Built Environment has been accepted into the 2023 Australian Research Council’s College of Experts.
Members of the ARC College of Experts – selected on their multi-disciplinary and cross-disciplinary expertise – support the advancement of knowledge and contribute to national innovation to play a key role in identifying research excellence. Members of the College are experts of international standing drawn from the Australian research community: from higher education, industry, and public sector research organisations.
Professor Liyanapathirana said she was honoured to be selected.
“I am excited and honoured to be part of the ARC College of Experts. I am looking forward to work with other members and contributing to the college, which includes implementing peer review reforms, identifying research excellence and recommending proposals for funding,” said Professor Liyanapathirana.
Professor Liyanapathirana’s appointment is recognition for her research contributions to Geotechnical Engineering where her research focuses on computational geomechanics; soft ground improvement methods; pile driving dynamics; and improving design methods for pile foundations to withstand ground deformations and vibrations induced by construction activities.
Professor Liyanapathirana has been the recipient of four ARC Linkage and Discovery grants (three as the first Chief Investigator), contributed to research councils of Austria, Canada and Norway and been an ARC assessor for more than a decade. In 2019 Professor Liyanapathirana was elected as a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers, Australia and was the first female Fellow elected from Australia to the American Society of Civil Engineers in June 2021.
During their three-year appointment members of the ARC College of Experts will have a key role in assessing and ranking ARC grant applications; making funding recommendations; recruiting and assigning assessors; and providing strategic advice to the ARC on emerging disciplines and cross-disciplinary developments.
