Western receives Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)

Dr Chao Xiong from the Hawkesbury Institute for the Environment has been awarded more than $450,000 as part of the Australian Research Council’s (ARC) Discovery Early Career Researcher Awards (DECRA) scheme.

Dr Xiong’s project, How climate extremes shape plant microbiome functions and pathogen invasion, secured $475,489. The project aims to investigate how extreme climate events impact the structure and functions of plant-associated microorganisms, which are essential for sustaining crop health.

This project will generate new knowledge about the responses of crop microorganisms to climate extremes and pathogen invasion. It aims – though novel microbial applications –

to boost plant resilience to climate change and pathogen threats, offering significant benefits to support sustainable agriculture.

Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation), Professor Ian Anderson congratulated Dr Xiong for securing the funding.

“I commend Dr Xiong on his funding success and look forward to seeing the real-world impact of this work, which reflects Western’s commitment to shaping a sustainable and resilient future,’ said Professor Anderson.

The ARC’s DECRA projects foster collaboration with national and international collaborators to address critical knowledge gaps and deliver solutions that address economic, environmental, social, and cultural challenges to improve quality of life and driving sustainable progress for all Australians.
