New partnership to boost sport in South West

Western Sydney University is pleased to announce a new partnership with South West Sydney Academy of Sport (SWSAS) — a leading sporting organisation that supports talent identified coaches and athletes from the areas of Camden, Campbelltown, Liverpool and Wollondilly.

The one-year partnership will see the two organisations collaborate on education and sporting opportunities, including internships at SWSAS for students studying the Bachelor of Health Science (Sports and Exercise Science).

Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover AO, welcomed the partnership.

“Western Sydney University is pleased to partner with the South West Sydney Academy of Sports to strengthen opportunities for sport and education in the region. Our students, in particular, will benefit from practical internships where they will help train and mentor aspiring young athletes,” said Professor Glover.

South West Sydney Academy of Sport CEO, Gerry Knights, spoke highly of the partnership and the benefits it will bring to both the Academy and Western Sydney University stating: “The Academy maintains its status at the forefront of Athlete development by continually looking for ways to improve its services to our athletes and local community. This new partnership will give the Academy access to one of Australia’s leading universities and we look forward to all the great work that can be done together.”

As part of their internships, students from the University will engage in a variety of sports and will perform a wide range of activities, from fitness testing to group strength and conditioning. Each student will be given the opportunity to lead sessions to further develop their coaching skills.

Daniel Currinckx, a Bachelor of Health Science (Sport and Exercise Science) student and current intern, has spoken highly of his experience at SWSAS: “I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to apply my knowledge and skills in a professional sporting organisation. SWSAS has provided outstanding mentorship and through the internship, my confidence and passion for exercise science has grown.”
