University Medallist Adiel Gounder

Adiel Gounder

Adiel Gounder was awarded a University Medal when he graduated at the University of Western Sydney's Spring ceremonies on 26 September with a Bachelor of Science (Honours).

For his honours project, Adiel studied in the area of chemistry and investigated catalysts used in biodiesel production.

Originally from Fiji, Adiel has been interested in chemistry since he was in high school.

“I was lucky to get a scholarship from AusAID so I could come to Australia and study forensic science for my Bachelor's and then Honours,” says Adiel.

Adiel found his experience at UWS to be very positive - in particular, he was impressed with the up-to-date and modern facilities and state of the art instruments that he used in his work. His lecturers and supervisors – Dr Adriyan Milev, Associate Professor Kamali Kannangara and Dr Nguyen Tran – were also very helpful.

“I am very interested in pursuing further study in the field of chemistry and I have already started a PhD at UWS and will investigate further on improving lithium ion batteries used in electric cars.

“Currently, there are a number of limitations to these batteries which limit their effectiveness in electric cars but I’m hoping to get past some of these limitations during my research.”

Adiel was also lucky to receive a Higher Degree Research scholarship from UWS.

Once Adiel has completed his PhD be plans to go back to Fiji to live with his family.
