Ranell Hobson

Ranell Hobson, a resident of the Blue Mountains, has been nominated for the 2013 Women of the West Award for her personal contributions to improving the health and fitness of people living in Greater Western Sydney.

Ranell has dedicated her life to developing awareness of the importance of good health, sport, fitness and nutrition – initially as a teacher in at the Western Sydney Institute of TAFE, and also through her own health and fitness business.

As the Head sport and fitness teacher at TAFE, Ranell empowers the next generation of new sport and fitness trainers. These students will go out into the wider community and pass on the benefits of adopting a healthy lifestyle, encourage people to select healthy foods, and incorporate exercise and physical activity into their daily routines.

Ranell is passionate about influencing the fitness and lifestyle choices of the people of western Sydney, and aims to affect change in the levels of obesity, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, stress and depression that are present in the wider community.

Ranell maintains an interest in the careers of her students, many of whom she personally mentors. She also develops strong links with local schools, community groups, and industry, to ensure that her students have opportunities to undertake work placements and gain on-the-job experience.

Her family business, The Academy of Sport Speed and Agility (ASSA), employs ten trainers and is responsible for nurturing the skills and talents of more than 180 athletes from the western Sydney region. Her own sporting achievements include winning multiple NSW, Australian and International champion titles in athletics.

Ranell was nominated for the 2013 Women of the West Award by Susan Hartigan, Institute Director, TAFE NSW – Western Sydney Institute, for “demonstrating a high level of professionalism, commitment and passion as a teacher and sportswoman.”
