Mandy Edwards, Placement Consultant, Indigenous Employment Program, Max Employment

Mandy Edwards, a resident of Macquarie Fields, has been nominated for the 2013 Women of the West Award for being an inspiring, talented and passionate Aboriginal woman who works to help people in the local community to reach their potential.

Mandy is well known in the local community for trying every avenue to enable those seeking employment to find a meaningful and valued place in the workforce. At Max Employment, Mandy has a caseload of 41 Indigenous clients.

Mandy was nominated for the 2013 Women of the West Award by the winner of the 2010 Award – Sister Kerry Macdermott. In Sister Macdermott’s nomination, she describes Mandy as “someone the young people can look up to and go to for advice.”

“They say if you ever want anything done, always ask a busy person. This is true of Mandy. She always has time for someone in the community who needs a hand... I have seen with my own eyes evidence of this when those who are seeking out employment run into her in the street or seek her out for extra assistance.”

“She is a true leader who never takes over, just steers the ship and works with the person and direct their skills and talents towards an achievable goal that will enhance their lives.”

Mandy’s dedication to the role perhaps derives from her own personal experience as a single mother looking to get back into the workforce. Her position at Max Employment came about through her own use of the company’s services.

Beyond her role at Max Employment, Mandy also gives generously of her time to Indigenous community events, assisting with the Appin Massacre Memorial Ceremony, Sorry Day, and Reconciliation Week ceremonies.

Mandy also goes beyond her paid work as an employment provider by consistently advocating for cultural inclusion for Aboriginal people in Sydney’s West and South West, and by serving as a member of the Police Aboriginal Consultative Committee (PAC).

Mandy’s nomination has been supported by a personal recommendation from Mr Laurie Ferguson MP, Federal Member for Werriwa, who states:

“One of Mandy’s greatest skills is her ability to listen and never judge. Her love for the Aboriginal community has given her strength to continue the much needed work in our community... Mandy Edwards has touched the lives of many in Macquarie Fields and beyond and has made a visible difference to their lives.”
