Former NSW Minister for Family and Community Services and former Australian Sex Discrimination Commissioner, the Hon Pru Goward has joined Western Sydney University as Professor of Social Interventions and Policy.
Dedicating more than a decade to state politics, Professor Goward’s public service tenure centred upon complex social issues and families. As a New South Wales minister, she held several portfolios, including family and community services, social housing and mental health. Professor Goward was also the first NSW minister for the prevention of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover AO noted Professor Goward’s outstanding public service career and her dedication to addressing disadvantage.
“Professor Goward’s impressive legacy in government includes a child protection system which resulted in a drastic reduction in the number of children entering care. She also oversaw the biggest social housing building program in the country.
“Western Sydney University prides itself on reducing inequalities and promoting inclusive and equitable quality education, and I am certain Professor Goward’s appointment will complement our important work in this area,” said Professor Glover.

“I care very deeply about effective social policy and I am delighted that my new position at Western Sydney University means I can continue to build on the work I was passionate about during my time in government.
“I am grateful for this opportunity to further deliver critically important work, which will translate into action and investment into breaking the cycles of intergenerational disadvantage that limit opportunity and ambition,” said Professor Goward.
