It’s time to start nominating for the annual Women of the West Awards

 Natasha Lay and Deborah Burgess

Western Sydney University is calling on the community to recognise the many, often unsung, women making a difference in the region by nominating them for the 2017 Women of the West Awards.

Held in collaboration with law firm Coleman Greig's (opens in a new window) 'Women in Business' networking forum, the annual awards showcase the wonderful work of women in Western Sydney – celebrating their leadership, passion, and the many and varied contributions they make to improving the lives of those throughout the region.

Last year's award winners include Deborah Burgess, Executive director of Bright Print Group who was recognised for her contributions to fundraising and philanthropy; and Natasha Lay, Western Sydney Coordinator of Youth Action NSW, who was recognised for her advocacy work, helping women and youth from the local community.

There are three award categories this year: Women of the West (business), Women of the West (community), and Young Women of the West, for women aged between 18-25 years. The winner of each category will receive a grant of $5000 to further their leadership and advocacy work.

Nominations are open until 10th February 2017.

Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor Denise Kirkpatrick, encourages people from across Western Sydney to nominate a colleague or friend who is going above and beyond to help their community.

"Since 2005 the Women of the West Awards have celebrated the many successes and the incredible contributions that so many women make to our region – whether it be in business, volunteering, charities and community work, education or health," says Professor Kirkpatrick.

"The University is very proud to host these awards together with Coleman Greig. We welcome people from across our region to show their appreciation for the many extraordinary women among us by nominating someone they know who is helping to shape Western Sydney."

"We're thrilled to be part of this initiative and I'd urge anyone who knows a Western Sydney woman who is doing extraordinary things to benefit the wider community to speak up and draw attention to their efforts," says Caroline Hutchinson, Coleman Greig Women in Business Ambassador.

The Awards will be presented as part of the University's International Women's Day celebrations in March.
