'A Dancer's Body' by Maria Muscara

The University of Western Sydney is continuing its support of young, up-and-coming artists with an exhibition of works by students from Elizabeth Macarthur High School at Narellan.

Until Friday 30th November, the walls of the Margot Hardy Gallery at the UWS Bankstown campus will be adorned with a diverse range of photographs and paintings all produced by students in years 7-11.

UWS Curator, Ms Monica McMahon, says the From Tip to Toe exhibition comes to UWS as part of the University’s ‘Campus Art Project’.

“Students from Greater Western Sydney are consistently demonstrating that they have exemplary artistic talents and skills, and are capable of producing works of art that would be at home in any Australian public gallery,” says Ms McMahon.

“The Campus Art Project is the University’s way of encouraging the talent of these students by giving them the opportunity to organise and curate their own exhibition, which can then be enjoyed by the wider community.”

'Frida Appropriation' by Ben Weeks

As part of their Visual Arts studies at Elizabeth Macarthur, the students explored the complex form that is the human body.

Year 7 students experimented with tone and shading using lead pencil, progresso and oil pastels, through appropriations of a self-portrait by famous artist Frida Kahlo.

Year 9 students used gesso and palette knives to create thick, gestural acrylic paintings of large-scale figures. The Year 11 students also created a body of works that incorporate the human figure in an interesting and dynamic ways.

The photographs were produced by Year 10 Photography students, who were tasked with creating postmodern portraits that included mystery objects provided by their teacher.

The From Tip to Toe exhibition is described as “a portraiture and figurative feast” which demonstrates the innovative and creative practices currently being taught in the high school curriculum at Elizabeth Macarthur High School.
