Study tour unlocks potential for creative design student
Bachelor of Design and Bachelor of Creative Industries (Advertising) student, Brayden Gennari, knew that as a creative there were many specialisations he could pursue within Western Sydney University’s communications offering.
Graphic Design was the clear choice for Brayden as it allowed him to unlock both his creative and technical sides.
“The University has impacted the way I think creatively, be an active problem solver, be innovative, career ready with hard and soft skills and solidified my purpose within the communications industry,” said Brayden.
“I learnt design is a solution to a problem and is completely directional.”
“I chose Western because looking at the course structure it was more practical, and I knew I’d thrive and be career-ready.”
After finishing high school in 2015, Brayden originally wanted to be a photographer. After deferring a Bachelor of Photography for a year, he realised that solely photography was not where his true passions lied and he later discovered the Diploma in Design at Western Sydney University’s The College.
“I completed the HSC in 2015, I didn’t get the marks I needed to get into the course I wanted to study back then but I did excel in my creative subjects such as visual arts and music.”
“I had a lot to think about, what direction I wanted to go with my future career. Five years of not actively learning and I was nervous but excited to start studying again.”
Fast forward to 2021, Brayden was enrolled and studying, realising his full potential and the opportunities that were ahead of him.
“I would recommend The College, and Western more broadly, to anyone because I feel that the teachers are nurturing and really want to see you grow.”
Graduating a year later with his Diploma Brayden was then eligible to enrol in the University’s Bachelor’s degree program.
“I’m now studying a double degree, which I know will give me that edge in the communications and creative industry.”
“To be interdisciplinary is something very interesting. All these specialisations interplay with each other and are crucial to delivering the best possible outcome, with either designing brand identities or major campaigns.”
As part of his studies, Brayden travelled to New York City with 13 other students, which left him feeling inspired and acted as a reminder of where his studies could take him.
“New York did amplify the idea of making it big as a graphic designer. It was incredible to see the works of famous graphic designers Massimo Vignelli and Paula Scher, and viewing how their work directs New Yorkers every day.”
“Seeing these works that I’ve studied, in the flesh is inspiring and makes me realise the impact I could make as a graphic designer.”
