Passionate electrician lights up new upskilled path with Bachelor of Construction Management
Zac Williams has always been interested in construction ever since he was young.
After finishing high school, Zac went on to complete an electrical apprenticeship and gained his electrical license, but says he wanted a new challenge and to further his career in the construction industry.
As the first in his family to study at university, the 24-year-old Penshurst resident decided to follow his passion by enrolling into the Bachelor of Construction Management (Honours) at Western Sydney University.
“Once I completed my apprenticeship and became licensed, I decided to upskill myself and go further in the construction industry which is my passion,” said Zac.
“Having a grandfather who was a builder meant that as a kid I was always doing something with building in my spare time. As I became older, I entered the construction industry as an electrician and my career has opened my eyes to the different aspects of the industry, from residential to large commercial and industry sites.”
Zac has successfully completed his first year of university, juggling the balance of work and study, and says he has loved the new challenges that his lecturers and practical lessons bring.
“I chose Western because I wanted to go to a university campus that has open spaces, with a diverse range of people and not just high school grads. My partner also went to Western.”
“One of the highlights of my university experience so far is probably my Environmental Building Design class and the engaging, sometimes tense class debates with our tutor – I like to be challenged and be able to participate in group discussions about an industry I am passionate about.”
In Zac’s first year, practical lessons focusing on building science including the use of measurement devices ranging from simple tape measures to laser devices and air quality meters gave students a brief introduction to real world industry skills, while this semester Zac will be focusing on Civil Works.
“We had our first prac this semester on Civil Works which was surveying the grounds of the Parramatta South campus near the river using different kinds of surveying equipment,” explained Zac.
“I love the construction industry – it is something that I am very passionate about, and I want to progress my career further into the future. The aim is to one day be a manager in a construction company running large jobs.”
