Western Sydney University rises up the global rankings
Western Sydney University is proud to achieve its best results in two prestigious global university rankings, underscoring the growing international calibre of our research and academic reputation.
Western is now placed in the top 250 universities in the world in the 2026-2027 U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities Rankings – up 23 places in 12 months to sit at 242 – while in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2027, it has jumped 30 places in 12 months to sit at 370.
Western’s rise in the QS rankings has seen it improve more than 250 places in 10 years, reflecting the sustained efforts made by Western’s academic and professional staff.
“Today’s results reflect the continued strength of our research community, the growing global impact of our work and continued realisation of our mission,’’ said Vice-Chancellor, Distinguished Professor George Williams AO.
“Our mission is to transform communities through student success and impactful research. Our researchers are tackling some of the country’s most pressing challenges: from adapting to climate change and addressing the environmental and social impacts of urbanisation, to improving the lives of those living with chronic medical conditions, to driving innovation that strengthens Australia’s future industries.”
Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Research and Innovation, Professor Ian Anderson added: “It is my great pleasure to see Western Sydney University record its best results in this year’s QS World University Rankings and U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Rankings.”
“To see such a significant rise over the past decade in the QS rankings in particular is a strong achievement, and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our academic and professional staff,’’ said Professor Anderson.
The U.S. News & World Report Best Global University Rankings, released this week, compare 2,250 of the top institutions globally, assessing research and global academic reputation. The QS World University Rankings evaluate universities globally across a range of indicators including academic reputation, number of citations, faculty-to-student ratios, employer reputation, employment outcomes and an institution’s social and environmental impact.
Western Sydney University has also been ranked the world’s number one institution in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings for four consecutive years (2022-2025) – a title that recognises the institution’s positive community impact.
Performance highlights for Western in the QS World University Rankings 2027 include:
- Improving its Academic Reputation ranking, achieving a world ranking of 437 – up 43 places from last year. This metric is taken from the annual QS Academic Reputation Survey, a global peer-review, designed to evaluate the perceptions of global academics on which institutions are demonstrating academic excellence.
- Our ranking for Citations per Faculty now better reflects our research output, achieving a world ranking of 312 – up 107 places last year. This ratio measures the average number of citations obtained per faculty member and is an estimate of the impact and quality of the scientific work produced by universities.
- Increasing its ranking on International Research Network, achieving a world ranking of 191 – up 20 places from last year. This indicator assesses the richness and diversity of an institution’s international research partnerships.
