Western Sydney University launches Chancellor’s Indigenous Postdoctoral Research Fellowship
Western Sydney University has today announced the launch of the Chancellor’s Indigenous Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, a new initiative designed to strengthen Indigenous research leadership and capability across the University.
The Fellowship will support early-career Indigenous academics to undertake a three‑year research project, providing dedicated time and support to develop high‑quality research with meaningful social impact.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Indigenous Leadership, Professor Michelle Trudgett, said the Fellowship represents an important commitment to Indigenous research excellence.
“The establishment of this Fellowship is an exciting step forward. It creates opportunities for Indigenous researchers to lead ambitious research projects that contribute to positive change and advance knowledge in areas of significance to our communities and society,” said Professor Trudgett.
Professor Trudgett added that the initiative also builds on the University’s long‑standing focus on Indigenous intellectual leadership and research capability building.
“Western Sydney University is deeply committed to Indigenous research. This Fellowship will support Indigenous scholars, recognise Indigenous intellectual knowledges, and build strong pathways for research leadership.”
Chancellor of Western Sydney University, Professor Jennifer Westacott AC, said the Fellowship underscores the University’s strategic investment in Indigenous research leadership.
“By investing in Indigenous scholars at a critical stage of their careers through the Chancellor’s Indigenous Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, we are strengthening Australia’s research future and ensuring Indigenous knowledge, perspectives and leadership are central to the work of our University,” said Professor Westacott.
The Fellowship forms part of the University’s broader commitment to advancing Indigenous leadership, research and education, alongside initiatives such as the Indigenous Centre of Excellence.
Located on Darug land at the Parramatta South campus, the Centre will provide a significant space for community, knowledge-sharing and innovation, and serves as a national benchmark for Indigenous leadership, research and education.
The Fellowship reinforces Western Sydney University’s leadership in Indigenous higher education and research, and its commitment to creating sustained pathways for Indigenous academics to thrive and lead.
