Western Sydney University appoints new Director of the Institute for Culture and Society

Western Sydney University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Juan Francisco Salazar as Director of the Institute for Culture and Society (ICS).

An internationally recognised leader in Antarctic humanities, social studies of outer space, Indigenous media practices in Latin America, futures anthropology and documentary film, Professor Salazar has been part of ICS since 2006 and previously served as Director of Research and Interim Institute Director.

His research and creative practice focus on the complex dynamics of socio-ecological change in contexts of profound upheaval. More recently, his work has explored social and technical imaginaries and practices of space futures.

Professor Deborah Sweeney, Provost, welcomed the appointment and highlighted the important role ICS plays in bringing together interdisciplinary research across the humanities and social sciences to address complex challenges.

“Juan will lead the Institute for Culture and Society with his extensive research and leadership experience to drive research excellence, impact, partnerships and global connection, building on ICS’s world-class research,” said Professor Sweeney.

Professor Salazar said he was proud to lead ICS as it continues to produce groundbreaking research and postgraduate training.

“The Institute for Culture and Society is uniquely positioned to mobilise engaged interdisciplinary research and practice to critically address the ongoing challenges posed by technological transformations, economic and political instability, environmental crises, and rising inequalities in urban and digital futures,” said Professor Salazar.

“I am committed to building on ICS’s strengths as an internationally renowned research institute for its high-impact, interdisciplinary and engaged research, demonstrating the depth, breadth, and tangible value of the humanities, arts and social sciences in public life.”
