Western Sydney University appoints new Dean of Engineering
Western Sydney University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Timothy Finnigan as the new Dean of the School of Engineering within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science.
Professor Finnigan joins the University with his extensive experience across higher education, research, technology commercialisation, and engineering consulting, and research interests in energy transition and sustainable development.
He was previously Head of the School of Engineering at the University of Tasmania, where he has led major strategy, curriculum, research, industry engagement and culture-renewal initiatives.
Professor Finnigan is currently the President of the Australian Council of Engineering Deans, providing national leadership on engineering education, research capability and workforce development. Earlier in his career, he was Director of CSIRO Energy, leading a national team of staff across energy research, strategy and technology development.
Distinguished Professor Brian Falzon, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, welcomed the appointment.
“The School of Engineering is home to state-of-the-art engineering education and research facilities, including our Parramatta Engineering Innovation Hub in the Parramatta CBD,” said Professor Falzon.
“Tim’s extensive experience across research, education and commercialisation, together with his research focus in energy transition and sustainable development, will strengthen the School’s impact and industry engagement.”
Professor Finnigan said he looked forward to working with colleagues in the School to nurture and foster the next generation of engineers.
“It’s an exciting time to join the School, with significant opportunities for engineering at Western Sydney University, particularly in relation to Bradfield City, the Western Sydney International Airport, the Aerotropolis, and related emerging digital sector and advanced manufacturing that go with these once–in–a–generation developments.”
Professor Falzon also acknowledged Professor Richard Yang, who will continue to lead the School of Engineering as Interim Dean until Professor Finnigan commences.
“We thank Professor Yang for his ongoing leadership and contribution during this transition period. His stewardship of the School has helped position it strongly for its next chapter, and we are grateful for his continued support as we prepare to welcome Professor Finnigan.”
Professor Finnigan will commence in the role on 28 September 2026.
