Western Sydney University appoints new Dean Built Environment and Design

Western Sydney University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Marc Aurel Schnabel as the new Dean of the School of Built Environment and Design within the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science.

An internationally recognised architect, researcher and academic leader, Professor Schnabel brings more than 30 years of experience across Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe. His research expertise is in design intelligence, integrating human creativity, artificial intelligence, digital transformation, and interdisciplinary collaboration to shape the future of design and the built environment.

He is currently Dean of the Design School at Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool Universi t y, where he leads the strategic development of education, research, industry engagement and international partnerships across Architecture, Civil Engineering, Industrial Design and Urban Planning and Design.

Distinguished Professor Brian Falzon, Executive Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Computing and Science, welcomed Professor Schnabel to the Faculty.

“The School of Built Environment and Design brings together the disciplines of Industrial Design, Architecture and Construction Management to address the complex challenges shaping our cities and communities,” said Professor Falzon.

“Marc Aurel’s international experience, together with his leadership in digital transformation and commitment to human-centred creativity, make him well placed to strengthen the School’s interdisciplinary approach and prepare the next generation of designers, architects and construction management professionals.”

Professor Schnabel highlighted the School's interdisciplinary strengths and the extensive opportunities for innovation and collaboration across the region.

I look forward to working with colleagues, students, industry and communities to strengthen education and research, build meaningful partnerships and shape more resilient, sustainable and inclusive futures.”

Professor Falzon also acknowledged Professor Swapan Saha, who will continue to lead the School of Built Environment and Design as Interim Dean until Professor Schnabel commences.

“Professor Saha has guided the School and we thank him for his valued contributions and leadership during this time.”

Professor Schnabel will commence on 15 October 2026.
