Powerhouse Parramatta opening— expert available for interview
The Director of Western Sydney University's Centre for Western Sydney is available to comment on the opening of Powerhouse Parramatta, including what it means for the people of Western Sydney, the local economy and the creative sector across the region.
Professor Azadeh Dastyari, Director, Centre for Western Sydney
Professor Azadeh (Az) Dastyari is the Director of the Centre for Western Sydney and a Professor of Human Rights Law at Western Sydney University. She leads place-based research, engagement, and advocacy that seeks to unlock the unlimited potential of Western Sydney, with a strong focus on challenging systemic inequality and amplifying community voices. Professor Dastyari has held academic appointments at Harvard Law School, Georgetown University, and the European University Institute, and her expertise is regularly sought by parliaments and United Nations bodies.
"Western Sydney has never lacked creativity or talent. What we've lacked is our fair share of investment and opportunities. Our research at the Centre for Western Sydney has found, for example, that Western Sydney received just 4% of the value of Creative Australia grants awarded between 2023 and 2025, despite being home to more than one in ten Australians. The rest of Sydney received more than five times that share. Powerhouse Parramatta has the potential to be a catalyst for a thriving creative sector across Western Sydney, opening doors for local artists, inspiring young people and showcasing the extraordinary diversity and creativity of our communities."
"The opening of Powerhouse Parramatta is an important recognition that the people of Western Sydney deserve world-class cultural institutions just as much as others. For too long, we have had to travel long distances to enjoy the cultural experiences available to those living closer to the centre of Sydney or in the Eastern Suburbs. With limited public transport options in many parts of our region, these journeys can be difficult, expensive and time-consuming, putting cultural experiences out of reach for many families. The Powerhouse Parramatta will help bring a lot more opportunities closer to home."
“Creative institutions and industries create jobs, drive innovation, attract visitors and investment, and make our region a better place to live, work and play. The Powerhouse Parramatta is an important investment in Western Sydney's cultural and economic future.”
