A career pivot propelled by postgraduate study

Ahmed Yar Khan’s academic and career journey has been anything but ordinary.

Starting his career as a pilot, Ahmed went on to study aviation management and later an MBA, working across major industries including aviation, infrastructure, financial services, energy, government and mining in both commercial management and procurement roles.

Through this experience, he realised he wanted to combine his commercial background with a profession grounded in advocacy, public impact and service.

Now completing the Juris Doctor at Western Sydney University, Ahmed is excited for the next chapter in his career, where he hopes to uplift people from diverse backgrounds and give a voice to those who are underrepresented.

“Returning to study law at Western Sydney University has been a defining step. It allows me to bring my experience into a profession where I can contribute to complex issues that shape industries and society,” said Ahmed.

“Western Sydney University prepares students exceptionally well for real world work. The Juris Doctor program is practical, industry connected and grounded in contemporary legal challenges.

“Through mooting, law school initiatives, professional experience, statewide leadership roles and close engagement with partners, lawyers, courts, judges, barristers and industry leaders, I have gained practical, hands-on exposure that reflects the realities of legal practice.”

Inspired by his parents, who both studied at Western after migrating to Australia, Ahmed knew he wanted to give back to the region that helped shape his family. Choosing Western felt like the right choice, particularly given the values of the University aligned closely with his own.

With graduation on the horizon in 2027, he is excited about the possibilities that lie ahead in his career as a commercial lawyer.

“My long-term goal is to contribute to Australia’s commercial and public sectors through strategic legal work that supports innovation, governance and community outcomes. I would also love to then enter politics and have a voice for people who feel underrepresented.”

Ahmed credits the foundations laid during his time at Western with helping him pursue these goals.

“The Juris Doctor has allowed me to bring together commercial expertise with statewide legal leadership. I was elected President of the Western Sydney Law Students’ Association, where I led major initiatives including the Attorney General’s Address, advocated for law students across the University and even mooted at the Supreme Court of New South Wales before the Chief Justice.”

“I was also the first Western Sydney University student elected as Chair of the Law Society of NSW SLCSS Committee, representing every law student in the state, and I was honoured to be nominated for Australian Law Student of the Year.

“I am passionate about representing Western Sydney and highlighting the talent, resilience and leadership that exists across our region.”
