Western Sydney University hosts annual Indigenous Students vs Staff Soccer Match
Western Sydney University proudly hosted its annual Indigenous Students vs Staff Soccer Match on Friday, 28 March at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre.
The event brought together students, staff, Elders, alumni, and the wider community, offering a wonderful opportunity to reconnect and celebrate in the spirit of friendly competition.
Over 100 members of the University community came together for this highly anticipated event. The event begun with a heartfelt Welcome to Country from Dr Michelle Locke, and the match was kicked off with Aunty Fiona Towney, Director of Indigenous Futures, performing the ball toss.
The Indigenous Student Team Captain was led by Captain Audree Campbell, and the Staff Team was captained by Dr Sarah Kennedy. The Staff Team also included Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Professor George Williams AO.
In a thrilling contest, the Staff Team emerged victorious with a narrow 3-2 win.
Professor Michelle Trudgett, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President, Indigenous Leadership, thanked everyone who participated, supported, and cheered on the teams.
“The match was an incredible event that brought together our Western Sydney University Indigenous students, staff, and the wider community. It was a thrilling game, filled with energy, teamwork, and camaraderie. Congratulations to the staff team on their victory, and the student team on their spirit,” said Professor Trudgett.
The match was refereed by Professor Kevin Dunn, Provost at the University.
The Best & Fairest Staff Member trophy was presented to Peter Kallas, while the Best & Fairest Indigenous Student trophy went to Bonnie Zawetz.
