Western Sydney University was proud to support this year’s Seven News Young Achiever Awards, which recognise the talents and hard work of young people across NSW & the ACT.
The Western Sydney University Academic Achievement Award acknowledges young people displaying passion, drive, and a willingness to learn and work hard to help them create opportunities and achieve excellent outcomes in their chosen fields.
At a special awards ceremony held on 2 May, Dr Cynthia Turnbull was awarded the Western Sydney University Academic Achievement Award. Dr Turnbull is a distinguished immunologist specialising in gene and protein regulators of the immune system.
The Canberra based early career researcher is committed to pioneering medical research that has the potential to transform treatments for autoimmune diseases, infection, and cancer. Dr Cynthia is a distinguished immunologist specialising in gene and protein regulators of the immune system. Her groundbreaking research on autoimmune diseases has been widely published and recognised in high-impact journals.
The Western Sydney University Academic Achievement Award was presented by Professor Brian Stout, the Pro Vice-Chancellor Learning and Teaching. Professor Stout was also the Western Sydney University Expert Judge for the award.

The University was also heavily represented by current students and alumni with over 15 Semi-finalists and finalists across the award categories, including in the OSMEN Furniture Creative Design Award, the Aboriginal Education Council Aboriginal Education Award and the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development Create Change Award.
The University has been a sponsor of the Academic Achievement Awards since 2019 and stands as a testament to honouring outstanding students who defy challenges, break new ground, and make a profound impact in their chosen fields.
The Young Achiever Awards is an awards program that recognises young people under the age of 30 residing in NSW and the ACT for excellence in their respective fields, including academic excellence, leadership, community service, performing arts and Indigenous achievements.
