Western Sydney University is proud to recognise Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor George Williams AO, with the title of Distinguished Professor – the University’s highest academic honour.
Distinguished Professor Williams was recognised during a ceremony for graduates from the School of Law, The College, and Graduate Research School on Saturday, 14 June at the Parramatta South campus, celebrating his exceptional contributions to constitutional law, public policy, and the advancement of education.
The title of Distinguished Professor is accorded to academics who have achieved eminence in their field of endeavour at an international level and who have given distinguished service to the University.
A barrister, constitutional law scholar and teacher, Professor Williams is a tireless advocate for our students, the University, and the Western Sydney community. Since his appointment as Vice-Chancellor, he has become one of the nation’s most influential voices in higher education.
During his occasional address, Professor Williams reflected on his own 33-year journey since sitting in a similar auditorium as a newly minted law graduate, highlighting the importance of being bold and resilient.
“The ups and downs of my career taught me that one of the most important attributes of any successful person is a willingness to pick themselves up after they have fallen down,” said Professor Williams.
“If my professional achievements reflect anything, it is my refusal to stop fighting for the causes I believe in, including justice and human rights for all. This determination shapes my role today as your Vice-Chancellor.”
Professor Williams holds a Bachelor of Economics and Bachelor of Laws from Macquarie University, a Master of Laws from the University of New South Wales, and a Doctor of Philosophy from the Australian National University.
Over a distinguished career spanning more than 25 years as a practising barrister, he has become one of Australia’s most recognised and respected experts in human rights and constitutional law. His works include Australian Constitutional Law and Theory: Commentary and Materials, which is studied by law students across the country.
He has appeared in the High Court of Australia on matters relating to freedom of speech, freedom from racial discrimination, Indigenous rights and the rule of law. Internationally, he has appeared in the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal of Fiji, most notably on the legality of the 2000 coup.
Throughout his career, Professor Williams has made significant contributions in the areas of human rights, Federalism, Indigenous justice, electoral law and national security, leaving an enduring legacy both nationally and internationally.
