International student thrives with ‘life-changing’ opportunities at Western Sydney University
International PhD student, Sonu, is the first in his family to pursue a doctoral degree overseas—a milestone that carries great significance both personally and professionally.
“Coming to Western Sydney University has been a life-changing experience," said Sonu.
“Pursuing my PhD at the University has been a transformative experience, allowing me to merge practical agricultural expertise with cutting-edge scientific research."
Sonu’s academic and professional journey has been shaped by a deep commitment to sustainable development and agricultural innovation. He said that his relentless passion for research, sustainability and social impact, are values he shares with the University.
“Western Sydney University stood out as the ideal institution for my doctoral studies in sustainability engineering, particularly due to its strong emphasis on sustainability research, advanced research infrastructure, and global rankings in environmental and water engineering disciplines.”
“My research focuses on the reuse of recycled water for hydroponics and the uptake of PFAS in vegetable crops, analysing their potential impact on human health.
“Given the University’s robust research culture and commitment to sustainability, as well as my supervisor’s exceptional expertise in this field, I can make the most of my extensive fieldwork, laboratory analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
“My experience has also been significantly enriched through global collaborations, leadership opportunities, and interdisciplinary research engagements.
“Western Sydney University is an institution dedicated to both academic excellence and student success.”
Beyond his studies, Sonu is a passionate member of the Western community, engaged in various clubs, societies, and initiatives.
“I like to collaborate with others and be an advocate for Higher Degree by Research (HDR) students, ensuring their voices and needs are actively heard and addressed.”
“My advocacy includes scholarship policies, research funding, resource accessibility, and overall student welfare.”
As an international student, Sonu knows firsthand just how important food security initiatives are for university students.
When he discovered the University had launched Western Pantry, a service that provides essential food and hygiene items to students at no cost, he was impressed by the commitment to student welfare.
“Many students, particularly international students and those facing financial challenges, struggle with food security while balancing academic and living expenses. By providing accessible food assistance, Western Pantry ensures that students can focus on their education without the added stress of food insecurity.”
“Food security is an often-overlooked challenge in academia and having an initiative that ensures students have access to essential food items speaks volumes about the University’s commitment to holistic student support.”
Sonu also appreciates that the initiative fosters a sense of community and promotes overall health and wellbeing, which he said are fundamental to a positive university experience.
“Initiatives like Western Pantry are critical in promoting student health and well-being, social equity, and inclusivity within the university environment. Beyond its direct impact, it also fosters a sense of community, encourages student engagement, and contributes to a supportive and thriving academic ecosystem.”
“The most remarkable aspect of this initiative is the student-driven approach, where students themselves are involved in creating a supportive and stigma-free environment for their peers.”
Reflecting on his own studies, and involvement in student centric initiatives such as Western Pantry, Sonu said he takes immense pride in being a part of the University community.
“The University has been more than just a place of study—it has been a platform for transformation, leadership, and impact.”
