Western Sydney University secures funding for transformative Indo-Pacific student experiences
Western Sydney University has secured new funding through the Australian Government's New Colombo Plan (NCP) Mobility Program, opening immersive education and cultural experiences for its students in the Indo-Pacific region.
The University will receive $906,620 to support 167 grants for local undergraduate students to undertake study, language training and internships across the Indo-Pacific region in 2024.
As part of this year’s program, Western Sydney University students will travel to India, Taiwan, Singapore, Timor Leste, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nepal, Japan, South Korea, Fiji, and Malaysia.
Students will engage in a diverse range of innovative projects initiated by the University, aligning with our commitment to global sustainability and advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. These include a conservation science study tour in Indonesia, a health and food security journalism immersion study in India, and screen media fieldwork study in Timor-Leste.
Professor Deborah Sweeney, Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Vice-President (Research, Enterprise and International)welcomed the funding success.
“Western Sydney University is proud to provide students with unparalleled global experiences while strengthening ties with the Indo-Pacific region through this prestigious program,” said Professor Sweeney.
“Funding from the Australian Government will enable unique experiences for our students and position them to take advantage of significant opportunities to gain new insights and form important connections.”
Western Sydney University was named number one in the world for its social, economic and environmental impact in the prestigious 2023 Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings for the second year in a row.
Learning abroad experiences, including the New Colombo Program, contribute to many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, including Goal 17: Partnerships for the Goals. Collaborations between educational institutions, governments, and organisations to facilitate these programs promote international cooperation.
These programs empower students with the knowledge, skills, and global perspectives needed to address the complex challenges of the 21st century, ultimately contributing to the collective effort to build a more sustainable and equitable world.
