Western Sydney University pledges to be nature positive by 2029

Western Sydney University has taken the next step to join the Nature Positive Universities network, an initiative led by the United Nations (UN) and the University of Oxford.

In its application to the UN for the nature-positive pledge, the University outlined its commitment to achieving a nature positive target by 2029.This global initiative aims to reverse biodiversity loss and promote thriving ecosystems by 2030.

As part of this pledge, Western Sydney University will measure biodiversity across our campuses creating a baseline for action, and setting clear targets to achieve biodiversity net gain by 2030.

Additionally, citizen science will be encouraged through initiatives like the Campus Biodiversity Network Naturalist Project. While providing transparent, annual reporting on our progress, the University will embed nature-positive practices across teaching, research, operations, and supply chains.

Joining the global Nature Positive Universities network builds on the University’s Race to Zero commitment.

Bill Parasiris, Vice-President, Operations and Commercial, said Western Sydney University is proud to join the global Nature Positive Universities network.

“By building on our Race to Zero commitment, this pledge ensures we not only reduce our impact on the planet but actively restore the ecosystems we all rely on, working towards becoming nature positive by 2029. Together, we can create a sustainable future for generations to come,” said Mr Parasiris.

Western Sydney University has been named number one in the world for its social, economic and environmental impact in the 2024 Times Higher Education (THE) University Impact Rankings for the third year in a row.

The Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings is the main global ranking system that comprehensively assesses universities on their commitment to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Rankings are based on universities’ teaching, research, outreach and stewardship.
