Western Sydney University hosts New Zealand Attorney-General for law lecture
New Zealand Attorney-General, The Hon Judith Collins KC
Western Sydney University proudly welcomed the New Zealand Attorney-General, The Hon Judith Collins KC, to its Parramatta South campus today.
Speaking as part of the School of Law’s Attorney-Generals Lecture Series, Ms Collins delivered a thought-provoking address on the constitutional and rule of law challenges in the current uncertain global environment. She further highlighted the central role of freedom of speech in preserving the civil and political liberties that define countries like Australia and New Zealand.
Her insightful address was followed by reflections on the rule of law and freedom of speech from Western Sydney University Vice-Chancellor Distinguished Professor George Williams AO, and former High Court of Australia judge, Justice Michael Kirby.
Professor Catherine Renshaw, Dean of the University’s School of Law, said the event provided valuable insight into the unique role of the Attorney-General in the constitutional systems of Australia and New Zealand.
“The address by Attorney-General Judith Collins was a powerful reminder that peaceful, democratic societies require that a range of actors, including judges, lawyers, citizens and elected representatives, commit to defending principles of justice, human rights, and the rule of law,” said Professor Renshaw.
In closing, Professor Renshaw announced that the Attorney-General had been appointed an Adjunct Professor of Law at Western Sydney University.
The lecture drew a diverse audience, including Federal member for Paramatta, The Hon Andrew Charlton, Judge Sharon Burchell, Major-General Jeff Sengelman, Western Sydney University Adjunct Professors Kim Lovegrove and Robert Whittaker, staff, students, legal professionals, and community members.
