Western Sydney University appoints new Dean of Humanities and Communication Arts
Western Sydney University is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor Saba Bebawi as the new Dean of the School of Humanities and Communication Arts.
Professor Bebawi brings over 20 years of experience in higher education across Australia and internationally, with a diverse background spanning music, media, and cultural studies. She joins the University from the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), where she is currently the Head of Journalism and Writing. Under her leadership, the Journalism program at UTS has become a flagship within the faculty, recognised for its high student enrolments, numerous awards, and excellent graduate employment outcomes.
Professor Kevin Dunn, Provost at Western Sydney University, warmly welcomed Professor Bebawi to her new role.
“Professor Bebawi’s commitment to inclusive education and her dedication to supporting diverse student populations will be invaluable to the School. Her research expertise in community media policy, alternative representations in global media, social media in conflict reporting, and investigative journalism, with a focus on supporting and empowering under-represented voices, will greatly contribute to the School’s mission,” said Professor Dunn.
In addition to her academic roles, Professor Bebawi is the Chair for the Global Communication and Social Change division at the International Communication Association, which is one of the largest and prestigious academic association globally in communication. She is also Unit Editor for Culture, Art and Knowledge Work for 'Al in Society' Oxford Intersections with Oxford University Press and a member of the Australian Research Council (ARC) College of Experts.
Professor Bebawi expressed her enthusiasm for joining the School of Humanities and Communication Arts.
“I am excited to work alongside colleagues and students at the School, which is a vibrant hub for interdisciplinary education and world-class research. Together, we’ll foster graduates who contribute to society as the next generation of thinkers, creators, and leaders,” said Professor Bebawi.
Professor Dunn also extended his sincere appreciation to Distinguished Professor Anthony Uhlmann for his dedicated leadership of the School of Humanities and Communication Arts as Interim Dean over the past few months. He will continue in this role until December.
