Western students celebrate diversity and inclusion at this years’ Sydney Mardi Gras Parade

Mardi Gras has held a special place in Vidushi Sethi’s heart ever since her first experience of the annual parade with Western Sydney University three years ago.

Vidushi, a Master of Public Health student at Western Sydney University says Mardi Gras is an important celebration that resonates deeply with her and reflects the values of love, unity, and diversity that she holds dear.

“Mardi Gras has an even deeper significance to me as an international student hailing from a country where acceptance of diversity isn't as widespread. It serves as a powerful platform that has granted me the opportunity to authentically embrace myself in ways I never thought possible,” said Vidushi.

“Amidst the vibrant chaos of the parade, I feel liberated from the societal constraints that I was afraid of before. It's a moment of profound empowerment, where I can openly express my identity and bask in the warm embrace of a community that celebrates every colour of the rainbow.”

“Mardi Gras has become more than just a celebration to me—it's a ray of hope and acceptance that reminds me that no matter where I come from, or who I am, I am worthy of love and belonging.”

Joining the Mardi Gras parade is not only about participating in a fun event for Vidushi; it's about standing up for what she believes in and supporting a cause that promotes acceptance and inclusivity.

For the tenth consecutive year, Western Sydney University participated in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade on Saturday 2 March, with the University’s contingent celebrating a decade of pride under the theme ‘Beyond the Rainbow – Building Our Future Together’.

“This year’s theme speaks volumes to me, it is a reminder that there's so much more to discover and celebrate beyond the surface, embracing the richness of our differences and coming together in solidarity,” said Vidushi.

“Knowing Western is marking its tenth year in the parade fills me with immense pride. It speaks volumes about the institution I've chosen to be a part of – a place that values diversity, inclusivity, and community engagement.”

“Seeing the university's long-standing commitment to spreading love and positivity reinforces my belief in its core values and makes me proud to be associated with such an institution.”

For Vidushi, Western’s involvement in Mardi Gras is essential to showcasing the University’s dedication to inclusivity and safety for all students to express themselves in a positive environment.

“By actively participating in community celebrations like Mardi Gras, Western is sending a strong message that it is a supportive and welcoming environment for individuals of diverse backgrounds and identities."

“This presence not only reinforces a sense of belonging among current students but also highlights to future students that our university is a secure and inclusive space where everyone can flourish regardless of their identity.”

Vidushi described this years’ Mardi Gras parade as a lively spectacle filled with an explosion of colours, music that sets the heart racing, and an atmosphere brimming with excitement.

Not only was she thrilled to hit the streets once again spreading joy and positivity, but also making a meaningful contribution to Western’s celebration of a decade of Mardi Gras pride.

“I couldn’t wait to sway to the beats, sharing laughs with fellow parade-goers, and soaking in the unforgettable moments. And, of course, losing myself in the vibrant chaos of rainbow madness that makes Mardi Gras so uniquely exhilarating.”

“Thank-you to everyone who makes Mardi Gras possible—from the organisers to my fellow volunteers and parade participants. Your dedication, passion, and spirit make this celebration shine brighter each year, and I'm grateful to be a part of it. Together, we made this year's Mardi Gras one to remember!”
