Professor Barney Glover appointed Jobs and Skills Australia Commissioner
Western Sydney University warmly congratulates Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Barney Glover AO who has been appointed the next Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia.
Professor Glover will take up the role in April 2024.
Established by the Australian Government, Jobs and Skills Australia provides independent advice on the current, emerging and future skills and workforce needs of the Australian economy.
Engaging with a wide range of stakeholders including employers, governments, unions, education and training providers it provides high-quality data and expert analysis and insights to Government on issues such as workforce participation, education and training, and economic productivity.
Professor Glover announced in December 2023 that he would not seek reappointment as Vice-Chancellor, following a decade of distinguished service to the University.
Commencing in January 2014, Professor Glover has been instrumental in shaping Western Sydney University’s extraordinary growth and development in its research reputation, transnational education partnerships, and sector-leading role in supporting student success.
Chancellor Professor Jennifer Westacott AO, congratulated Professor Glover on the prestigious appointment.
“On behalf of the University community I warmly wish Professor Glover all the best for this next exciting chapter. He has been a bold and decisive leader for the University and has confidently guided it through significant change, challenges and opportunities,” said Professor Westacott.
“He leaves the University incredibly well positioned for future success, growth and innovation, all the while ensuring the University remains firmly embedded in Western Sydney. His dedication to the region’s social, cultural and economic development reflects a deep commitment to our local communities and profound understanding of the life-changing impact of higher education.
“As a passionate voice for equity, inclusion and skills development, I know he will make an outstanding Jobs and Skills Commissioner and will continue this important advocacy into the future.”
Professor Glover said he is proud of the University’s students and staff, and all that has been achieved over the last decade.
“Together we have nurtured this University’s distinct mission and identity, ensuring a rapid rise in tertiary attainment across the Western Sydney region over the last decade – an outstanding outcome,” said Professor Glover.
“We are incredibly fortunate to have a staff and student community that is passionate about social justice and social inclusion and developing a more sustainable, equitable future for all. It has been an honour to lead this University and I look forward to its continued success.”
The Board of Trustees has commenced an international search for the next Vice-Chancellor consulting with students, staff and community during the recruitment process. Professor Clare Pollock will be interim Vice-Chancellor from April.
