Congratulations to Emeritus Vice-Chancellor Professor Barney Glover named Sydneysider of the Year

Western Sydney University warmly congratulates Professor Barney Glover AO on being named ‘Sydneysider of the Year’ at the Sydney Awards held overnight.

Professor Glover, the University’s Emeritus Vice-Chancellor, was one of a number of winners celebrated at the fourth annual Sydney Awards, delivered by urban think tank the Committee for Sydney, in partnership with Macquarie Business School and The Daily Telegraph.

The Awards celebrate the people and projects that have helped shape Sydney to be one of the world’s great cities.

Professor Glover was recognised for his role in helping transform Western Sydney during his tenure as Vice-Chancellor of Western Sydney University.

Developing high-tech, high-rise campuses as part of the University’s bold infrastructure redevelopment program has helped draw government and corporate investment and spark important urban renewal in the key cities across Western Sydney.

The University grew its reputation in research impact and student success through Professor Glover’s bold and decisive leadership across his decade-long tenure. The University’s international reputation and outlook also expanded rapidly under Professor Glover’s direction, while also ensuring the University remained of and for its region.

Now, as the first Commissioner of Jobs and Skills Australia, Professor Glover provides expert advice on Australia’s skills needs, guiding workforce studies and collaborations.

Accepting the award, Professor Glover said it was an enormous privilege to be named Sydneysider of the Year. He said he was humbled to be alongside so many Sydneysiders who do so much for this great city.

“To me, it’s Western Sydney that says so much about the future of Sydney. I’m excited by it, I’m excited by where Sydney is heading,” he said.

“There's been a connecting theme right through my working life, and that is equity and uplifting Australians to participate in tertiary education, particularly for people from a disadvantaged background.

“I want to particularly thank the people of Western Sydney. It's a privilege to lead a university. It's an extraordinary privilege to lead Western Sydney University.

“This is an incredibly vibrant city, but Western Sydney is extraordinary in its own right.”
