Western Sydney University researchers recognised as national leaders in their field
The Australian's 2024 Research Magazine (opens in a new window) has ranked Western Sydney University and researchers as national leaders in their field in areas of health and medical science; earth and life sciences; and humanities, literature, and the arts.
The prestigious sixth annual Research Magazine celebrates Australian research excellence, ranking the top researchers and institutions in Australia in 250 research fields.
Western Sydney University's NICM Health Research Institute has been recognised as Australia's leading institution in the field of Alternative and Traditional Medicine in 2020, 2022, and 2023, while NICM's Professor Jerome Sarris has been named as the nation's field leader in Natural Medicines and Medicinal Plants for the second year in a row.
Associate Professor Mark Antoniou from the University’s MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development has also been named as the national field leader of Language and Linguistics for the second consecutive year, with Western Sydney University ranked as the leading research institution in this field.
Western Sydney University congratulates the following researchers and academic program leaders on their dedication to high impact research and achieving national recognition in their fields.

The rankings were determined by impact scores used to measure both quality and impact of research to reveal the top Australian researchers and research institutions in 250 fields.
A researcher’s field impact score is equal to the citations for papers published by that researcher in the top 20 journals in that field in the past five years. The researcher with the highest impact score is the top researcher in that field.
An institution’s field impact score is calculated by summing the individual impact scores in that field for that institution’s affiliated researchers. Similarly, the institution with the highest impact score is the top research institution in that field.
Western Sydney University was recently ranked, for the second year running, as number one in the world in the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings (opens in a new window) for its social, economic and environmental impact.
