Short course helps nursing student turn her dreams into reality

Student Patience Kabiche

Looking to upskill ahead of a career change, Patience Kabiche discovered Western Sydney University’s Undergraduate Certificate.

Studying at an Australian university for the first time since relocating from Ghana, Patience enrolled in an Undergraduate Certificate – or short course – in Health Services Management as her next step to achieving her goal of becoming a nurse.

Studying an Undergraduate Certificate at the University’s pathway provider, The College, has given Patience the flexibility needed to support her current lifestyle and continue working in disability support while broadening her horizons.

Reflecting on the importance of flexibility for those wishing to upskill or pivot in their careers, Patience said, “It is so important for people who are working to have flexible options for further study to upgrade their skills and refresh their field specific knowledge. I believe I have gained the foundational knowledge and skills needed to achieve my career ambitions.”

“I wanted a program that offered flexible study options and one of the initial drawcards was the ability to start the program immediately.

“The University has provided opportunities for me to develop practical skills that can be applied in the workforce, as well as social networking opportunities that will be valuable throughout my life.”

Patience is studying online, while she continues to work and live in the Northern Territory. Her efforts have already been recognised as she continues to advance within her current role.

“It has been great studying and participating in group assessments and interacting with the tutors and other students online.”

“It has been eye opening learning about culture and diversity in healthcare settings, the Australian health system, and the communication skills I need at work. This has improved my interaction with clients and co-workers in my current job, giving me the skills I need to advance to a Support Coordinator role.”
