New pathway to teaching a major boost to help aspiring teachers into workforce sooner
Western Sydney University welcomes the proposed introduction of a new one-year Master’s pathway to teaching announced today by the NSW Premier Dominic Perrottet, and Minister for Education and Early Learning, Sarah Mitchell.
“This new pathway represents a significant strategic shift to teacher education and gives the University the opportunity to support aspiring teachers to enter the teaching workforce,” said Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Barney Glover AO.
The NSW Government proposes changing its current eligibility requirements to enable those with an undergraduate degree and a one-year Master’s degree to become fully-qualified teachers.
Western Sydney University offers a diverse set of programs to support teaching careers across all stages of the education life-cycle, including a ‘three plus two’ pathway to teaching comprising a three-year undergraduate degree and two-year Master of Education qualification.
Professor Glover said the new one-year Master’s program will complement the University’s existing pathways to teaching.
“The ‘three plus two’ model is a highly regarded program for teacher preparation, particularly for school-leavers,” said Professor Glover.
“However, for those who are looking to capitalise on their industry experience, an accelerated pathway allows highly qualified professionals to enter the teaching workforce sooner.”
“We have worked hard as a sector to develop high-quality pathways to teaching programs and we welcome the opportunity to work with the Department to implement the announced changes,” added Professor Glover.
