Western Sydney University has celebrated the installation of its new Chancellor, Australian business leader, Professor Jennifer Westacott AO.
Professor Westacott was formally installed as the fourth Chancellor and first female Chancellor of Western Sydney University at a ceremony held at the Parramatta South campus.
Professor Westacott, who also serves as Business Council chief executive, was elected as Chancellor by Western Sydney University’s Board of Trustees in August 2022. She succeeds Emeritus Chancellor Professor Peter Shergold AC, who retired as Chancellor in December 2022 after 12 years of outstanding service to the University.
As one of Australia’s most prominent and highly regarded public figures, Professor Westacott has forged a distinguished career in senior leadership roles in both the private and public sectors over 40 years.
Passionate about both education and Western Sydney, Professor Westacott said she looks forward to working with the University community to further harness the power of the region.
“Western Sydney is a fast-growing, regional powerhouse. As the third largest economy in Australia, one of its greatest strengths is its cultural vibrancy, energy and social diversity,” said Professor Westacott.
“And now for the first time the proportion of people in Western Sydney with a university degree exceeds the national average.
“For over 30 years, Western Sydney University has been a catalyst for the region’s extraordinary growth and transformation. It is a legacy I am immensely proud to continue.
“I look forward to being a part of an institution that isn’t just the leading force for creating skills and knowledge jobs in Western Sydney, but one that champions our region to elevate it to its rightful place in our national economy.
“Most critically, I look forward to working with the University community to boost the participation in higher education – providing opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds to succeed at university and preparing graduates to address our nation’s workforce needs and strengthen economic and social prosperity.”
Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover AO, said Professor Westacott brings formidable professional experience and a deep-felt understanding and long-held respect for the Western Sydney region and its people.
“The installation of a new Chancellor is a significant moment in the life of a university. A powerful champion for equity, inclusion and social change, Professor Westacott is an exemplary leader who is passionate about the role this University plays in driving Western Sydney’s economic and social transformation and the positive impact that education has on individuals, families and communities,” said Professor Glover.
“The Western Sydney University community warmly congratulates Professor Jennifer Westacott on her installation as Chancellor and celebrates this next exciting chapter in our journey.”
