Western Sydney University works with the community to begin ‘Regenerating Lithgow’
Western Sydney University’s Maldhan Ngurr Ngurra Lithgow Transformation Hub has received $828,264 from the National Recovery and Resilience agency as part of the Black Summer Bushfire Recovery Grants Program.
Designed to help communities address priorities and activities for recovery after the bushfires in 2019/2020, the grants program is supporting the Lithgow community to come together and begin to heal. In response to this need, the Lithgow Transformation Hub has developed a program titled ‘Regenerating Lithgow – People, Place and Planet’.
Professor Alphia Possamai-Inesedy, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Engagement and Advancement), said Western Sydney University was proud to lead this important program.
“Being embedded within a community that was impacted so deeply by the Black Summer bushfires provides Western Sydney University a unique chance to help the community develop and rebuild,” said Professor Possamai-Inesedy.
Bringing together elements of Citizen Science, Creative Practice and Industry Development, the capacity-building project will run until 31 May 2024. During which time the Lithgow Transformational Hub will run a mix of education, skill-building, mentoring and creative activities that will continue to build on the resilience of the community.
The program comes as Western Sydney University is named number one in the world according to the latest Times Higher Education Impact Rankings. The impact rankings are assessed on universities commitments to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.
“This ranking is especially entwined with the program we will be running with the Lithgow community. It fits under a number of the Sustainable Development Goals that the University is proud to have been able to develop,” said Professor Possamai-Inesedy.
Maldhan Ngurr Ngurra Lithgow Transformation Hub Manager, Deb Bardon, is proud of the work her and the team at Lithgow are doing.
“This program is just part of the work we facilitate here at the Lithgow Transformation Hub. Along with this program, we have several core activities we are focused on at the moment. This grant will allow us to build with the community, develop the space and fulfill their needs,” said Ms Bardon.
