Western Sydney University has warmly welcomed thousands of students on campus as part of ‘Welcome Week’ celebrations.
Held from 28 February to 3 March, the lively, activity-packed week gives the University’s new and continuing domestic and international students the opportunity to come together before the semester kicks off on 7 March.
“Our Welcome Week celebrations are a valuable way to welcome our students back to the vibrant campus experience and student life they expect,” said Vice-Chancellor and President, Professor Barney Glover AO.
“We know how challenging the last couple of years have been for our students and staff, including learning and working mostly online. This is an opportunity to acknowledge the tremendous resilience they have shown during the pandemic, as well as celebrate their commitment to study and the support they have shown each other.”
On-campus activities include live performances, BBQs and food stalls, campus tours, course sessions, and stalls from a wide range of University clubs and societies. There are also plenty of social activities and other opportunities for students to get out and about and get to know their classmates.
The events, support sessions and activities are about helping students feel part of the Western Sydney University community – whether they are international students or domestic students, mature age or current school leavers.
The activities are designed to build connections with peers and staff, familiarise students with their home campus and broader Sydney region, and help them settle into university life, recognising that each student brings with them their own unique life experiences.
After a long wait, Western Sydney University has been pleased to welcome international students back to its campuses.
Professor Glover said the University community has worked incredibly hard during the pandemic to engage with and support its students – particularly offshore international students.
In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the University rapidly mobilised and scaled up innovative support initiatives such as its sector-leading, integrated and personalised support program, Western Success. The program has been vital in connecting international students to a strong support network and helping them navigate university life while studying offshore.
“We have ambitious plans to expand our highly-personalised Western Success program to help all our students stay on track with their studies as they transition back to campus – ensuring they continue to have a positive and rewarding university experience with us,” added Professor Glover.
Rose, who attended Welcome Week at the University’s Parramatta South campus, said she was “excited, hyped and ready for a fresh start”.
“I’m studying Law and Community Justice because I want to advocate and help my community. I want to make my little niece and family proud,” she said.
“It feels amazing to be back on campus and I just love the energy on campus today and the connections I’m getting to make.
“I already made a new friend on the bus ride over.”
