Western Sydney University celebrates women's equality

Western Sydney University will celebrate women across the world, including the diverse and talented women from within the University community, as part of International Women’s Day 2022.

This year’s theme ‘Break the Bias’ speaks to eliminating barriers to create a more diverse, equitable, and inclusive world – a theme that will be front and centre at a range of events hosted by the University on Tuesday, 8 March.

Students, staff and community partners will come together for the University’s ‘Breaking Barriers’ International Women’s Day event, featuring a presentation from keynote speaker Amna Karra-Hassan, an activist and advocate for diversity, inclusion and gender parity in Western Sydney.

As founder of the first women's AFL team in the region, Ms Karra-Hassan is widely recognised for the diversity she brought to the game, taking the code to Western Sydney and pioneering programs for women from minority communities.

Professor Deborah Sweeney, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research, Enterprise and International and Professor Clare Pollock, Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor will also speak at the event, alongside thought leaders from the University who will lead an engaging panel discussion.

Esteemed panellists will include Dr Amira Aftab, School of Law; Ellen Brackenreg, Executive Director, Equity, Safety and Wellbeing; Associate Professor Brahmaputra Marjadi, School of Medicine; Associate Professor Lucy Nicholas, School of Social Sciences; and Associate Professor Corrinne Sullivan, School of Social Sciences.
