New students get taste of uni life at Western Sydney University

As HSC results are released and prospective students get set to make those final decisions about further study and their future careers, Western Sydney University has been extending an extra helping hand with opportunities to give students a taste of university life.

The University has been giving students the chance to get to know more about the University by holding masterclasses, zoom ‘hangout sessions’ and campus tours throughout December in the lead up to HSC results being released and ahead of classes commencing next year.

Students have been able to get to know peers, academics, as well as get a first-hand feel for the University’s state-of-the-art campuses, the student experience, and the wide range of helpful student support and wellbeing services on offer.

Selina Cabacar is studying international studies and law at the University, and is one of the friendly faces from the Student Services Hub who has been helping students and supporting one of the masterclasses.

Herself a final-year student, the Penrith resident said she has been excited to meet prospective students and offer tips and advice and share her own personal experiences, which includes getting the chance to travel overseas for an international learning opportunity.

“One of the main things I looked for when choosing a university was to be able to feel a sense of belonging, diversity and support that would help me to be myself, savour my learning experiences and pursue my career aspirations,” said Selina.

“Western has given me that kind of platform and more, which I believe has been made possible by its community of students who come from a range of cultural, ethnic, and educational backgrounds.”

Selina said the law masterclass has been a great way to give future law students a chance to learn more about what they can expect from the course, answer any questions, and boost their confidence.

“Attending a masterclass has been a great first step to get to know the University and students can also connect with the Student Services Hub – the main go-to for students seeking general assistance,” she said.

“I think that being able to feel at ease and secure with your surrounding environment, including your home campus and tutors, is as important as having a strong passion for your studies.”

Selina said it was natural to become overwhelmed at the idea of starting a degree but students should be open to challenging and adapting their goals. As she put it, ‘give it a good shot and aim to apply yourself with enthusiasm’.

For students still not sure about what they want to study or perhaps didn’t get the marks they were hoping for, Selina’s best advice for future students is not to worry – there’s many pathways to uni.

“We’re here to help! Reaching out is always the best way to get any advice or support you need. Remember, you are more than ATAR, and Western Sydney University has many options to help hard working students on the path to success,” said Selina.

Prospective students can reach the University’s Student Services Hub for advice and support on 1300 897 669.
