Former ABC news chief Gaven Morris joins Western Sydney University
Western Sydney University’s School of Humanities and Communication Arts is pleased to announce the appointment of former ABC news chief Gaven Morris as Industry Professor.
A highly-respected journalist and news executive, Professor Morris was most recently the Director of News, Analysis and Investigations at the national broadcaster, a position he held for six years and where he led a team of 1,300 staff.
With more than 30 years’ industry experience, his long list of career highlights also includes working for leading international news organisations CNN and Al Jazeera.
As Director of ABC News, Analysis and Investigations, Professor Morris was instrumental in the decision to relocate a large part of the ABC’s news operations to Parramatta and embed it in the heart of western Sydney – one of Australia’s fastest growing and most culturally-diverse regions.
Professor Matt McGuire, Dean of the School of Humanities and Communication Arts, warmly welcomed Professor Morris to the School. He said his appointment affirms Western Sydney University’s position as one of Australia’s leading universities for the study of journalism, communications and creative industries.
“I have no doubt Gaven Morris will make an outstanding contribution to the School and to the teaching of our programs. We look forward to him sharing his extensive knowledge and expertise in journalism and broadcasting with our staff and students, as well as his unique insights on leading and delivering strategies for large-scale digital and organisational transformation,” said Professor McGuire.
Professor Morris said he is delighted to be joining the School and the University.
“I’m thrilled to be joining Western Sydney University and to be working with staff and students to share insights and learnings I’ve gained across 30 years in journalism and the media, both here and overseas,” Professor Morris said.
“I’m so passionate about western Sydney, its incredible communities and the work the University does to foster emerging talent, so I can’t wait to make a contribution.”
