Families are invited to enjoy a free day of fun as they learn about STEM at Family Science Day

Family Science Day

Sydney Science Festival 2022 will come to life in Parramatta on 20 August as Western Sydney University, in partnership with the Powerhouse and City of Parramatta Council, host Family Science Day at Western’s Parramatta City campus and Parramatta Square.

The free family day will include live demonstrations, hands-on activities and presentations celebrating STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) across multiple areas such as medicine, climate change and astronomy.

Families will have the chance to see Western Sydney University’s Solar Car on the day and talk to the team about how they push the boundaries of engineering. Researchers from Western’s MARCS Institute of Brain, Behaviour and Development will also present their work, with interactive demonstrations addressing questions such as ‘what can robots teach us about humans?’ and ‘what is the brain’s hidden super power?’

Dr Genevieve Quek from MARCS Institute for Brain, Behaviour and Development – who will be demonstrating her research on the day – encouraged people of all ages to get involved in the Sydney Science Festival and encouraged families to attend Family Science Day.

“At its core, Science is about curiosity, a drive for discovery, and problem-solving, fundamental aspects of being human that we all share. That means that science is for everyone, and that anyone can be a scientist,” said Dr Quek.

“The Sydney Science Festival is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to see and touch science in action, and to connect with the people who do science every day, right here in Australia. Importantly, Family Science Day will also highlight diversity in science, enabling members of the public to connect with the wide variety of people working in science today.”

Beyond Family Science Day, Western Sydney University academics will be involved in a variety of activities across the Sydney Science Festival. This includes the ‘Space Imaginaries Symposium’ (opens in a new window) which will bring experts in planetary sciences, space exploration and social and environmental justice together for a full day symposium.

This year’s Sydney Science Festival theme is Revival, which will bring attention to topics including sustainability, environmental rejuvenation, and recovery.

Sydney Science Festival is the Powerhouse’s flagship science program . It aims to challenge and broaden perceptions of science while critically examining its influential role in society. The festival coincides with National Science Week, Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology.

You can register for the free Family Science Day here (opens in a new window).

The full program of Sydney Science Week, which runs from 12-20 August, can be found here (opens in a new window).
