Topic: Your language, my categories: the link between speech and cognition is more flexible than we think

Speaker: Prof Susan Hespos

A link between language and cognition is at the core of what it is to be human. Because languages vary in sound and meaning, infants must learn which distinctions their language uses. For speech perception this process starts broad, accepting a range of sounds, and narrows to the native sounds of their languages(s) over the first year of life. In this talk, we ask whether a similar process governs learning labels for categories. We present some initial evidence in support of developmental narrowing for category labels and describe future studies that comprise an upcoming ARC grant proposal.

MARCS staff and students are reminded that all meetings and workshops have an important role in building and maintaining the sense of community which is central to the success of MARCS as a cooperative and energetic research institute.

Disclaimer: MRM meetings may be recorded on Zoom for future access to MARCS members
