This online webinar is an across research theme event at WSU. It aims to provide training to WSU researchers on building research partnerships with industry and is open to all WSU academics and researchers.

The Innovation Connection Funding Scheme will be discussed, and the funding facilitator will take you through the application process for this scheme – which is not based on competitiveness. You will also have the chance to learn from three very experienced WSU researchers about their experience in building successful research partnerships with industry.

About the speakers and panel members

Dr. Julie Wheway is a STEM commercialisation specialist, and she combines her passions for scientific research, science communication, and technology transfer. Gemaker help Australian researchers to collaborate with industry and commercialise their technologies, and train and mentor researchers in industry engagement. In her role at Gemaker, Julie helps to take new ideas to market by developing and implementing commercialisation, funding and marketing strategies for research organisations and innovative businesses. Julie also trains researchers to navigate the cultural differences between academia and business and facilitates networking events to promote and enable research-industry collaborations. Prior to joining Gemaker, Julie had a 15-year academic career as a researcher and lecturer in the field of immunology at the University of Sydney and the Garvan Institute.

Dr. Peter Milic is the Innovation Connections Facilitator for the Innovation Connections funding scheme. The Innovation Connection funding scheme provides small and medium sized businesses with the opportunity to collaborate with the research sector in developing new ideas with commercial potential.

Prof. Zhong Tao has a research background in the areas of construction materials, steel-concrete composite structures and structural fire engineering. He currently has active research collaborations with Nu-Rock, Somerset and Australian Coal Research Limited.

A/Prof. Catherine Attard is an Associate Professor in Mathematics Education and Deputy Director of the Centre for Educational Research. Catherine has conducted a number of funded projects for the NSW Department of Education and various Catholic School Dioceses. Her research has also attracted funding from other non-school industry partners including Transport for NSW (Sydney Metro and Parramatta Light Rail), Slate Science and Financial Literacy Australia.

Dr. Mariam Darestani is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Engineering. She has more than 10-years’ experience in the field of advance materials in academia and industry. Her research interests center on developing innovative materials and products for sustainable engineering. Most of her research projects are in collaboration with industry partners
