Thesis Title
Dis/liking genre, artist and work in the discovery of new music: developing a model for the predictive recommendation of unfamiliar recorded music
Research Project
How would you recommend music from a particular genre to someone who has no or limited exposure to that community of music production and consumption? Even for those well-versed in a genre, how can we best predict which newly created works to recommend in the absence of social liking information?
My research is broadly interested in understanding how musical preference operates, together with the subsequent development of models to support recommendation and discovery by users in the context of digital music services. In developing this model I seek to synthesize findings from both experimental perception of affect together with naturalistic findings which emphasise the social and situational context of everyday music usage.
