Dr Dominique Estival presents at Around the World conference

MARCS researcher Dr Dominique Estival (pictured right) recently presented a talk at the Around the World "Big Data" conference on Friday 1 May.

Dominique showcased the Alveo Virtual Laboratory, an online infrastructure for accessing human communication data sets including speech, texts, music and video.

The virtual laboratory provides users access to specialised tools that enables them to search, analyse and annotate this data. Dominique was one of six UWS researchers who presented at the Around the World conference, which was streamed worldwide over 24 hours.

The theme of the conference for 2015 was "Big Data" and format of the conference was a 10 minute talk from each presenter, followed by a panel discussion.

The conference is an experiment that brings together a research dialogue without the environmental cost of traditional conferences.

Institutes and researchers are invited to participate either through presenting or by joining in the discussion.

The Alveo project is led by Dr Dominique Estival, with the University of Western Sydney as the lead organisation. UWS is in partnership with, and acknowledges funding from, the National eResearch Collaboration Tools and Resources (NeCTAR) project to develop Alveo.

NeCTAR is an Australian Government project conducted as part of the Super Science initiative and financed by the Education Investment Fund.
