Memories of the past are critically important as we age. For older adults in residential aged care, opportunities for reminiscing with staff may provide important cognitive and emotional benefits. Importantly, some reminiscing conversations are more supportive than others. In developmental research, a long tradition of sociocultural memory research has shown how children’s autobiographical memory is scaffolded and supported by parents during reminiscing when parents use particular kinds of beneficial conversational techniques. In the current project, we aimed to examine whether we could enhance conversations between staff and residents within residential aged care, by teaching staff about these beneficial conversational techniques and supporting them to reminisce more often with residents. Overall, findings suggest opportunities for training to give aged care staff evidence-based and practical tools that they can implement to improve conversations during day-to-day care. MARCS staff and students are reminded that all meetings and workshops have an important role in building and maintaining the sense of community which is central to the success of MARCS as a cooperative and energetic research institute.
