Abstract: While many public discussions about air pollution is focused on it being a major contributor to anthropogenic climate change, rarely is discourse focused on its effect on human health. Air pollution is associated with about 8 million deaths each year worldwide, attributed to respiratory and cardiovascular disease. During the recent 2019-2020 bushfire season, it is estimated that air pollution from the bushfire smoke was responsible for 420 deaths. However, the largest known urban source of air pollution is actually exhaust emissions from motor vehicle transport. In this talk, Sally will present an overview of the literature on air pollution and health, as well as discuss initial results from her research, including interesting data recorded during the 2019-2020 bushfire season.

Note: There will be no MARCS Afternoon Colloquium (MAC) in July. MMM will be held at the usual MMM time of 11AM.

MAC will resume on the 3rd of August with a talk by Associate Professor Genevieve Steiner, Director of Research, NICM Health Research Institute.
