Research Program: Speech and Language

Biography

I investigate early language acquisition in typically developing monolingual and bilingual infants, and children who are at risk for developing linguistic impairments. My doctoral work at Lancaster University focused on the origins and development of the mutual exclusivity strategy in the process of word learning.

I have a particular interest in the relationship between lexical acquisition and the development of early social and cognitive capacities. I also investigate the effects of bilingual first language acquisition and early second language learning on language development, and the advantages that these experiences represent for the early social and cognitive maturation.

  • Influences of speech perception skills on early word learning, language, and literacy development (The seeds of literacy: Speech perception and reading)
  • The development of strategies that facilitate early lexical acquisition
  • The effects of bilingualism and second language acquisition on early linguistic development
  • The relation between linguistic, social, and cognitive development in infancy and early childhood
