The University is an Access Partner with Advance HE (opens in a new window) (formerly, the Higher Education Academy) which allows us to offer a Fellowship scheme to academic and professional staff at Western. The initiative – the Western Educational Fellowship Scheme (WEFS) – provides staff with an opportunity to apply for international and externally peer reviewed recognition of their learning and teaching practice according to the UK Professional Standards Framework (opens in a new window).
To obtain a Fellowship, you prepare a written application of your educational practice with reference to the UKPSF (the word count depends on the level of Fellowship sought); you register for a free My Academy portal; you upload your application to the Advance Higher Education and pay the application fee for your Fellowship application to be externally assessed. Pending a successful assessment outcome, a Fellow can then demonstrate their status through the use of the following post-nominal:
Associate Fellow - AFHEA
Fellow - FHEA
Senior Fellow - SFHEA
Principal Fellow - PFEA
Successful Fellows then join a community of 2,000 or so Australian-based HEA Fellows, and over 200,000 Fellows across the world.
Applying at Western
Across 2017 and 2018, the 21C project has supported just over 40 Western staff - both academics and professional staff - become Fellows of Advance Higher Education. Our list of Western Fellows (opens in a new window) is currently being updated to reflect this.
There are currently two Pathways for staff to become Fellows of Advance HE. Both pathways take advantage of Western’s institutional membership to pay half price application fee.
The Do-it-Yourself (DIY) Pathway is for anyone in the University that wants to apply, feels they need little support in putting together their application, and can cover the cost of the half price application fee. You can apply at any time directly through the Advance HE website.
The Supported Pathway is for staff that have formally applied to the Learning Transformations team and been accepted to be mentored and supported through the application process as a result of their participation in the 21C project. Your application fee is also paid for by the 21C project.
A call for applications to the Supported Pathway will be announced in due course.
You can ask to join the VUWS Western site for the Fellowship Scheme for information about WEFS. Email the 21C project to be added.
